| 1974 | A group of army officers lead a bloodless coup. An army general is appointed President. |
| 1975 | Angola, Mozambique become independent. |
| 1976 | Mario Soares becomes Prime Minister. |
| 1982 | Return of civilian rule and the military regime is abolished. |
| 1985 | Portugal joins the EU. |
| 1986 | Mario Soares is elected President. |
| 1999 | Portugal adopts the Euro as its legal currency. Macao is transferred to China. |
| 2002 | Manuel Barroso sets up a center - left government. |
| 2003 | Barroso hosts President Bush and Prime Minister Blair at the Azores before the war in Iraq. |
| 2004 | Portugal hosted the European Football Championship. |
